Special Needs Dentistry in Wilton
Children with special needs often need extra time and patience at the dentist. Dr. Ashleigh Sebro is passionate about giving all of her patients a positive experience regardless of individual ability.
Special Needs Patients
Pediatric dentistry encompasses extensive training not only in growth and development but knowledge of common (and uncommon!) diagnoses of childhood. We recognize that dentistry can be a difficult ask for children who have differences in ability. Our offices is ADA compliant and accessible and we treat a wide range of patients with much success.
As a parent it is important to know that you are bringing your child to an office that cares about their well being as a person. At Wilton Pediatric Dentistry we like to say we don’t just treat teeth, we treat children. Every child is an individual and no two approaches are the same. Whether your child has sensory challenges around flavors, textures, etc or a developmental delay that makes things just a tiny bit tougher. We approach dental appointments with patience and care so that every child (and parent!) leaves feeling heard and taken care of.
We use a variety of techniques, including frequent “happy visits” or desensitization to accomplish dental visits in a safe and low-stress manner. We welcome parents to call and inquire about this, and often work with behavioral aides and therapists to help our patients succeed. It is some of the most rewarding work that is closest to Dr. Sebro’s heart.
If you’d like to know more about how we can assist your special needs child in having a positive dental experience please give our office a call.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do you treat children with autism spectrum disorders?
Yes! Wilton Pediatric Dentistry welcomes all children regardless of diagnoses and ability to our office! Our team is well versed in behavior management and will work with you and your child to navigate dentistry today and moving forward. Dr. Sebro uses a variety of techniques including tell-show-do, social stories and peer modeling to help children accomplish a positive dental visit.
When should I bring my child for their first visit?
The earlier the better! We recommend adhering to the AAPD guideline of within 6 months of first tooth eruption. This translates to 12-18 months for most children. We recognize that due to anxiety many parents put off the first dental visit for fear of a tough interaction. However in our experience coming early leads to better cooperation at later stages.
I'm worried they won't cooperate in the office!
That’s ok! Children are notoriously unpredictable and we’re used to it. We will meet your child where they are and come up with a plan to navigate dental visits moving forward!
How can I prepare my child at home for their dental visit?
Positive talk about the dentist is very helpful. Social stories (pictures of the office, pictures of the doctor, pictures of the dental setting) are often used as well to introduce the concept at home. Being consistent with home care (brushing and flossing) will also help as your child will be more used to having their mouth touched by other people. Simple explanations of what will happen (i.e., you will come in, the doctor will brush your teeth, then you will get a prize) also help nervous children have a concrete idea of a timeline.
our clients love us
Dr. Ashleigh is the best pediatric dentist my kids have ever seen. She is patient and talks to the kids calmly and rationally. My daughter has special needs, and Dr. Ashleigh is so aware and accommodating of her needs. She explains every step clearly to me and the kids. To say I’m impressed is an understatement.
Alyssa A
My older daughter who is 7 has sensory issues and a strong gag reflex, has never been able to get through a regular check up. The last checkup, she was able to sit through the dentist counting her teeth and that was it. But with Dr. Ashleigh and her wonderful assistant, she was able to get through the entire check up. My daughter and I were both ecstatic!
Sarah D
Wonderful with my son who has ASD. He loves going here. Would definitely recommend.
